Do you have FTP software
available for download?
Yes, we recommend using an excellent shareware program
called WS_FTP.
You can download this program for free directly from our
server.
For the Mac, "Fetch" is available:
What FTP host name do I use to
access my web site(s)?
To update your web pages, FTP into ftp.yourdomain.com
using your the USERID and PASSWORD provided on your
account activation notice. Prior to domain registration
(or transfer) you will need to use the IP address as the
FTP hostname. (i.e. 207.xxx.xxx.xxx vs.
ftp.yourdomain.com) The IP address associated with
your domain is also included in the activation notice. If
you create any links using the IP address, we suggest
that you modify the HTML to reflect your domain name once
active world wide. Using relative paths rather than
absolute paths when linking web pages will eliminate the
need to modify your links.
What should I do if denied
access via FTP or to "stats"?
- If you can access your account Control Panel, but
cannot access your account via FTP, the FTP
configurations may be incorrect. Be sure to read
the FTP tutorial.
- If you are denied access to either or both AFTER
entering your userid and password, you may be
using the wrong password. Check the activation
notice sent to you via email when the account was
first set up. If you changed your password and it
doesn't seem to be working, contact support@interspace.net
to reset your password.
- If you can connect via FTP, but not open your
Control Panel, carefully read the Control Panel
access instructions included with the activation
email.
- If you cannot connect at all, or connect and then
"hang", there may be problems with
connectivity. You can test your connection by
going to
http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/secure/trgw-s
while still connected to the Internet. This
program will take about 15-20 minutes to generate
a report. You will need to send the results to
support@interspace.net so we can help you track the
problem.
What should I do if denied
access to my web site when using a browser?
If you receive the message "There is no DNS entry
for http://www.yourdomain.com", there are several
possible explanations:
1) Try to reach the site using the IP address. If you
are successful, the domain name is either not active or
not yet propagated.
For a NEW domain, it may take up to a week for the
name to be released by InterNIC and propagated to DNSs
(Domain Name Servers) throughout the Internet. (Foreign
domains and transfers take longer).
If it is an older domain that has previously been
reachable, the name may be on hold with InterNIC. Contact
InterSpace directly to determine the reason the name is on
hold.
2) If you can reach the site with the IP address and
you know it has been more than 72 hours since the name
was released by InterNIC:
- Clear your browser cache and try again.
If you are using Netscape Navigator, first select
Options | Network Preferences, then choose the
Cache tab. Click on the buttons "Clear
Memory Cache Now" and "Clear Disk Cache
Now" and OK, then click Reload.
For Internet Explorer Select View | Options, then
the Navigation tab and click "Clear
History" and OK, then click Refresh. Note:
Netscape may require manually clearing the cache.
With Windows Explorer find the Netscape folder
(e.g. C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator\Cache -
then highlight and delete the files in the Cache
folder - then click on Reload)
- If you know that others are able to reach the
site with the domain name but you can't (even
after clearing the Cache), contact your local
ISP. They may not have updated their DNS records.
- If you are still unable to reach it after all of
these steps, email support@interspace.net for
assistance. Be sure to describe all the steps you
have already taken.
3) If you are unable to reach the site with either the
domain name OR the IP address you may be experiencing
connectivity problems.
If you are able to reach ANY sites with your browser,
go to:
http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/secure/trgw-s
(substitute your domain name in the URL)
This program will take 20 minutes. After you receive
the email from the program send the results to
support@interspace.net so that InterSpace's support team can track
the problem.
If you are unable to reach this URL, either wait until
connectivity is restored and try again, or contact your
local ISP for information on possible network problems.
What are the six folders I see
when I connect to my web site?
When you connect to the root or "home"
directory of your account via ftp, you will see the
following system directories/folders which are landmarks
suggesting a successful connection:
Parent Directory 14-Mar-96 22:13 -
bin/ 14-Mar-96 22:02 -
cgi-local/ 10-Oct-95 18:07 -
etc/ 14-Mar-96 22:02 -
lib/ 14-Mar-96 22:02 -
stats/ 14-Mar-96 22:05 -
The only directory you may need to use is cgi-local;
this directory is reserved for custom scripts. You can
transfer files directly to the root level and/or create
subdirectories.
How do I get my page to load
automatically?
You must name your main loading file either
"index.htm" or "index.html" . Be sure
to name everything in lowercase, not
"INDEX.HTM" . Also, this file must to located
in your home directory, which is the first directory you
see when accessing the web server via ftp.
What directory and file names
are acceptable?
Our operating system (IRIX) is case sensitive. In
other words, the file name "faq.html" is NOT
the same as "FAQ.html". If your HTML code
references a faq.html, but the actual file name is in
uppercase, this will result in a File Not Found error.
This applies to directory names as well.
To prevent errors, we suggest naming all files in
lowercase. Spaces and and special control characters are
generally not a good idea. The underscore character
("_") is acceptable. You should avoid special
characters (e.g. ! @ # $ % ^ & * : ') in file names.
We suggest that you keep the length of file names to a
minimum. The tilde (~) cannot be used in directory or
file names.
How do I update my web pages?
You can literally create and maintain your web pages,
images, and scripts locally and upload them to the web
server at your leisure via FTP. You
can overwrite existing files or transfer a new file.
What is the function of the
"cgi-local" directory?
This directory allows you to execute a CGI script
written in Perl, Unix Shell, or C. Perl and shell
programs are self-compiling and can be utilized
immediately after transfer to this directory/folder. C
programs must first be compiled by InterSpace before they will
function.
How do I create sub-directories?
We recommend using the "make directory"
feature in our recommended FTP client software, WS_FTP.
Please note that subdirectories cannot be created under
the cgi-local directory.
How can I simulate sub-websites
within my account?
To simulate a sub-web site, you have to create a new
directory (or folder to MAC users) and then upload the
main loading page (index.htm). You can setup as many
sub-web sites as you wish. InterSpace only charges additional
fees if you go over the allotted disk and data transfer
limits that are established in your pricing plan.
How do I access my personal
web-based Control Panel?
Once your domain is active, you can access your
Control Panel in the following manner:
If your domain name is still in the registration
process, you can still access the control panel using the
temporary URL provided within your activation notice.
If your IP address is: 123.12.123.12, then you would
enter: http://123.12.123.12/stats/
When will I be able to reach my
site using the domain name?
Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has
been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it
usually takes about 72-hours before it is active. All
internet providers must update their records (DNS tables)
to reflect new site locations. This is called
propagation.
How do I announce my site?
We recommend that you register your web site with the
major search engines beginning with Yahoo,
WebCrawler,
Lycos, and
AltaVista.
Look for an "add URL" option at each of these
sites as well as links to other search engines.
Currently, there is no charge to register with the
aforementioned search engines. If desired, you can
register with a site called, Submit-it!. This site
allows you to enter your information one time and then
submit to the many of the major search engines; however,
a fee may be required.
How Do I Update My Web Site's
Listing on the Search Engines?
You should update your listings in the major Search
Engines and Directories (Yahoo, Lycos, Altavista, HotBot,
Excite, etc.) if you have made any significant changes to
your web site such as: changing your domain name,
changing file or directory names, moving pages to
different directories, adding or deleting files, or
making significant changes to the text on a page for
which you want your listing updated quickly.
To update your listings with the Search Engines, you
can re-submit the URL of your index page and let their
spiders 'crawl' through the rest of your site or you can
re-submit the URL of each of the pages that has changed.
You can delete an old listing for an outdated URL by
submitting the URL of the old page once that page has
been removed from the web server. When the Search Engine
tries to index the non-existent page, it will get a
"File Not Found" error and will delete any
entries it has for that URL.
If you simply move your entire web site (including
your domain name) from one web hosting provider to
another, you will not need to update your listings with
the search engines.
How can I monitor web usage
statistics?
Select View your web usage statistics & logs from
your Control Panel to see what domains are accessing your
web site, how many "hits" you are getting, how
much data is being transferred and more. If needed, you
can download the raw log files to your local computer for
analysis and use gzip
to uncompress them. We use MKStats to track web
usage statistics. You may select that either MKStats version 1.0 or
version 2.1
software be used. (Note: Mac users who have trouble
unzipping the logs with Stuffit Expander should try using
MacGzip)
Can custom reports be generated
from raw log files?
The MKStats and Analog Stats programs are system-wide
programs and cannot be custom configured for one
customer. However, we offer several products that enhance our service,
such as Virtual WebTrends and NetIntellect, which will
allow you to generate your own statistical reports from
your log files.
Can InterSpace restore my file(s)
from backup?
If your account is active and you need a file or
multiple files restored from backup, please send email to
support@interspace.net with the following information:
- domain name
- date to base file restoration (specify
"CURRENT" if the most recent copies are
needed)
- specify file name(s) or "ALL"
*** Please note that there is a minimum $50
restoration fee.
Although we have installed a 40 TB (terrabyte) robotic
tape backup system, its presence is to ensure that we can
restore files in the event of an emergency related to an
in house system failure in which case no restoration fee
would be required.
